Eric Manuel Albor explains a coding activity in Spanish during an MMAC’s COSBE Be the Spark school visit at SSR.

Eric is fluent in several languages–many of which include programming languages. However, he speaks fluent Spanish and Japanese. You might expect this if you knew that his parents are immigrants from Michoacan, Mexico and that he holds a bachelor’s degree in Japanese language and literature from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee; but this was not widely-known among his colleagues until SSR hosted a group of students as part of COSBE’s Be the Spark program. A large portion of the students spoke Spanish only. Eric quickly jumped in to help with translation. What’s more is the students were visiting from the very same middle school that Eric had attended. Eric says, “I saw myself in those kids, and I wanted them to know, if there’s a will there’s a way. Si hay ganas, si se puede! Visualizing success for yourself can be more challenging than actually achieving it. That’s why I think it was important for these kids to see someone who looks and speaks like them, made it here!”

The example Eric’s parents’ set as immigrants, compelled Eric to make a career change from stone masonry. He returned to school and earned a degree in Software Design from Waukesha County Technical College. Eric recollected, “I realized that I was taking the path of least resistance and that I was no longer personally developing. I decided that it was time to flex my mind rather than my body.”

Eric started at SSR as an intern on our advanced software solutions team and was recently hired on full-time. “It’s not often a stone mason turns into a software developer, but what really sets Eric apart is his leadership, thirst for knowledge, and drive to deliver great solutions for our clients.,” says Raj Muthupandiyan, SSR’s director of advanced software solutions.

As a stone mason, Eric’s focus had to be quality of service. “While you are precisely placing each brick you also have to keep your eye on the project as a whole,” says Eric, “which aligns directly to software development. You have to keep an eye on the overall solution to get the best results.”

“Eric is a great add to our SSR family and has already made an impact on our team.,” Muthupandiyan says, “We’re excited to have him on board. He has a bright future ahead of him!”
